Rosemary Conley’s Hip and Thigh Diet Overview

First published in 1988, Rosemary Conley’s Hip and Thigh diet book became a best seller in the U.K. and has since spawned a whole slimming empire. The diet has changed a little, to incorporate low glycemic index foods, but the basic principle of the diet (i.e. extremely low fat) still remains.

Rosemary Conley now has her own chain of fitness clubs in the U.K., a range of low-fat, low glycemic index (G.I.) foods, a magazine, cooking and exercise equipment products. The Hip and Thigh website covers all these areas and can be somewhat difficult to navigate as it contains so much information. The site does include many standard features of dieting websites; testimonials, an online store, free diet profile and ordering information, although surprisingly there are no FAQ’s.

Rosemary Conley’s Hip and Thigh Diet – Product Description

Rosemary Conley’s Hip and Thigh Diet

Because Rosemary Conley is based in the U.K., the only option available to North American customers in regards to the actual Hip and Thigh Diet is to either purchase the book (the original Hip and Thigh Diet or newer G.I. version), order the Slim at Home pack, or join the online dieting site, Slim Online. The at home pack contain the G.I. book, a pedometer/ calorie counter, a workout DVD, Conley’s Portion Pots, a tape measure and exercise resistance band. The cost of the pack is 39.99 British pounds, approximately $80.00.

A better option would be to join the online club where the member receives more personal and community support. There are a number of different plans available to the customer depending on their diet and long term goal: the regular G.I. Hip and Thigh diet, a vegetarian version of the diet, the Jeans Diet or Lifestyle Change Plan. Although no explanation is given as to the major differences in the plans, it is known that the Hip and Thigh Diet consists of a 2 week intensive ‘Fat Attack’ (phase 1) followed by a long term maintenance plan (phase 2).

Other features of the online service are a food and fitness diary, a personal weight loss and exercise coach, a free set of Portion Pots, 24-hour access to the site plus access to the ‘coffee shop’ (the community forum and chat room). The plans are available in a number of different options for U.K. customers (1 month, 3 months or yearly) but international customers are only offered the 3 month package at a cost of approximately $100.00 plus $20.00 per month thereafter.

Rosemary Conley’s Hip and Thigh Diet – Drawbacks

  • International customers only have one membership choice
  • The fitness clubs are only available throughout the U.K.
  • The diet initially prohibits most foods containing fat, even the ‘good’ fats (omega-3, non-saturated for example)
  • The website has too many sections and snippets of information, making it hard to navigate
  • All the prices on the site are listed in english pounds with no conversion to dollars

Rosemary Conley’s Hip and Thigh Diet – The Bottom Line

Undoubtedly, following a diet that is so low in fat will result in some weight loss, but it is unlikely that without the addition of regular exercise it can be maintained over time.

For those living in the U.K., joining one of the many Hip and Thigh fitness centers would probably be a good idea as they are designed to incorporate exercise into the regime. For the North American customer however, there really is no incentive to join, particularly when there are so many similar options available to them locally.
