Axokine Overview

Though Axokine has the potential to be a new weapon in the battle against obesity, the developer has abandoned efforts to produce and market the product. Generally referred to as an anti-obesity drug rather than a weight loss supplement, at first glance Axokine, an appetite suppressant that works by inhibiting processes in the brain to make you feel full, might appear to be the medical industry’s response to significant weight problems. The drug was originally in development as a treatment for ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease, but researchers found it caused loss of appetite in clinical test subjects.Regeneron Pharmacueticals, the company producing Axokine, applied for trials with obese and diabetic subjects, but found the response in subjects only moderately successful and pulled the drug.

Axokine - Product Description

AxokineAxokine does not have an official product website nor is a complete ingredient list readily available. Regeneron began testing the drug with a few different purposes, but it never “passed” its preliminary 3-year study, so it was not released onto the market either as an over-the-counter or prescription-based diet aid.It is an appetite suppressant that works by inhibiting processes in the brain to make users feel full. Official clinical studies showed that Axokine was only successful about 30% of the time, while the rest of the testers ended up developing antibodies to the synthetic chemical. In weight loss circles, 30% may be considered successful, but developers did not consider this a successful trial, so Axokine was never released by the FDA as a prescription medication.

Axokine Advantage

  • Axokine has been widely tested in significant clinical studies for FDA approval for safety, effectiveness and side effects.
  • Axokine has the might of the medical research community behind it.
  • Initial studies of Axokine did not reveal any significant side effects.
  • Animal trials of Axokine did not show the rebound weight gain after cessation of the drug that is so common in diets and diet aids.

Axokine - Drawbacks

  • Axokine is not available either in a prescription form or over the counter as the developer abandoned their FDA approval process because Axokine’s anti-obesity effects are clinically significant in the short-term, but most likely inadequate for long-term weight loss.
  • A widely reported large scale clinical trial reported disappointing results for the obesity drug.
  • Long term side effects of Axokine, if it were available for use, could be serious.

Axokine - The Bottom Line

Axokine may have been the miracle pill so many overweight people are looking for, but unfortunately it did not stand up to the rigid standards serious drug companies hold their products up to. Deemed insignificantly effective to successfully market, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals withdrew their application for FDA approval. There are not plans to resurrect the drug as yet, but that does not mean that others will not pursue it in the future.
